Unspoilt and untouched by the modern day developments, Ella is everyone’s favourite upcountry village.  Taking a train ride through the evergreen tea plantations and gushing and cascading waterfalls is a spectacular experience; the stunning view of the rising sun through the mountain valleys diminishes the sore muscle pain from the strenuous hike to the Ella Rock.

Kandy, the last capital of the golden days of the royal era; the resting place of the Sacred Tool Relic of Lord Gauthama Buddha and a Buddhist stronghold. Since Kandy has been declared a World Heritage city, the wonders of the royal days have been preserved underneath the modern exterior.

Over 1000 years ago kings ruled Sri Lanka from Polonnaruwa and was a thriving commercial center.  A self-sustaining dynasty where kings boasted their culture and literature in every structure built; legendary temples with beautiful details, seven storied palaces with sprawling landscaped gardens, massive monasteries for monks, intricate network of canals and reservoirs suggest a glorious era of ruling.

Jaffna, the administrative capital of Jaffna peninsula, has been juggling through many phases; despite invasions from South India and European powers, few decades of civil war would not diminish the unique Hindu traditions and creative culture.

The remnants of the Portuguese, Dutch and the British colonialism has added to this vibrant and charming beach town located few km’s from Bandaranaike International Airport. The local community, fishermen, are friendly and contended with their share of daily catch from the lagoon.

Colombo, known as ‘The Garden City of the East’, might no longer live up to its moniker but still carry the legacies of colonial garden roots. Fort is a fascinating place with its landmark colonial architecture while the cosmopolitan area houses stylish eateries, boutiques and galleries.

The crumbling remains of enormous dagobas and Buddha Statues, ancient pools and sprawling rich gardens suggests an opulent era of ruling in Anuradhapura. A great many archeological and architectural marvels are still remain in use as holy places and temples. Anuradhapura is one of South Asia’s most evocative sights frequented by locals and foreigners alike.
