History of Kalpitiya runs back to Portuguese colonization in early 17th century and then the arrival of Dutch and associated with maritime trade and a strategic base of a military garrison and naval outpost. It is not the history that attracts contemporary traveler to Kalpitiya today, but the highly social and highly intelligent pods of dolphins showing off their swimming skills to the wonderstruck tourists.
